project life 2015 // week six.

February 2 - February 8.What went on this week: This week it snowed a hell of a lot again (so. sick. of. it.), so me and the kids spent a lot of time inside. Max wanted to get a haircut, which is insane because a little less than a year ago the kid would cry hysterically at the thought of a haircut. This particular one was huge because he let the woman use the buzzer on his sideburns and neck, something I never thought he'd want, so I was super proud of him, and it was kind of an adventure for the two of us because he's never let me take him for a haircut alone. Little things that are kind of big things are my absolute favorite.Details + interesting tidbits: I've been dying to use that "you make me..." card with the gold foil, so finally getting a chance to use it kind of made me pick everything else based on that one little card. I got a new pen for photos, the zig photo signature pen, and it works so well on the canon selphy paper that I'm not even that upset about it's glossiness anymore (mentioned here), so that was a win.Photo Breakdown: phone photos: 10 // DSLR photos: 1 // polaroid photos: 0. Taken by me, the self-timer, and shutter remotes.Materials Used: PL Core Kits: seafoam edition (striped card), Studio Calico PL kits: camelot ("you make me happy..." card); cirque ("today's adventure" card, week card), calendar card, fiskars corner rounderfiskars paper trimmerstaz-on jet black ink, smash date stampzig photo signature pen in black (on photos), zig writer marker in black (on journal cards), canon selphy wireless printer, canon selphy ink + paper kit.

plastic animal photo holders.

I have had this idea forever, pretty much since I cleaned my room back in 2012 when I moved back home after college (I have cleaned it since then, promise), and threw out a bunch of weird photo stands that I got from sweet sixteens and bat mitzvahs over the years. I wanted ones that actually looked cute, and then when I started the spray painting frenzy of '13, and bought a million little plastic elephants (exhibit a), I knew I had to combine the two ideas.This project was actually super easy. All I used was spray paint, 20-gauge wire, plastic elephants (you can obviously use whatever animal you want), alligator clips, super glue, and a drill with 1/16 bit.Spray paint the plastic animal, and when dry, drill a hole into its back. Cut the wire (I did it by eye, it's somewhere between 2-3") and super glue one end of the wire to an alligator clip (I colored my alligator clip in with a gold paint pen so that it matched the gold of everything else). When that was fully dry, I glued the other end of the wire into the elephant's back, and held it for a minute until it was sturdy enough to dry standing up on its own.Between everything drying and setting and whatever else, this took me about an hour. I made two, then broke out my polaroid camera and shot a photo of Lucas and a selfie, just to put something in them for now. I love the way they turned out, and feel like it's an easy gift idea as it can be customized with any animal or figure depending on who it is. VoilĂ .

project life 2015 // week five.

January 26 - February 1.What went on this week: I only worked a three day week, so I had a lot of blog downtime, and a full weekend to spend with my friend Lauren, who lives in the city. The only photos I took of the entire weekend were of food. Because that's what was important, obviously.Details + interesting tidbits:  I started with using that multicolored journal card on the right page because I liked that the orange on it went with the orange in the coffee photo, so that I chose the other journaling cards and a week card each in a different color that matched the rest on the multicolored one. It's not cohesive, but at the same time really is. I'm into it.Photo Breakdown: phone photos: 10 // DSLR photos: 1 // polaroid photos: 0. Taken by me, the self-timer, and shutter remotes.Materials Used: PL Core Kits: seafoam edition ("recorded" card), Studio Calico PL kits: far far away (multicolored journal card, date banner); penny arcade (wood banner); cirque ("loving" card); walden (week card), less is more stampselise joy stampsxyron create-a-sticker, tiny attacher, fiskars corner rounderfiskars paper trimmerstaz-on jet black ink, smash date stampzig writer for vellum marker in black (on photos), zig writer marker in black (on journal cards), canon selphy wireless printer, canon selphy ink + paper kit.

friday link love | 11.

This video is everything.
A new trailer for PP2!
This validated my childhood.
Sia's performance with Maddie Ziegler and Kristen Wiig at the Grammys was phenomenal.
So obsessed with this tank top.
A highly scientific analysis of the meaning of girls names that cracked me up.
Can't. Stop. Listening. To. This. Album.
Blanket forts for the win.
Need to move out and build something like this shelving unit.
I finished a full series Parks & Rec binge (the six seasons on the 'flix) in just over a month and these noteworthy scenes killed me: Ben's surprise, Game of Thrones reference, a perfect Ann & Leslie moment, Leslie drunk, and the high point of Leslie's city council campaign.
I took the pledge. Will you?
If this doesn't make you die laughing, I don't know what will.

project life 2015 // week four.

January 19 - January 25.What went on this week: This was my first week back with the kiddos, and it was great. I finally finished my 2014 album, went into the city on Friday for lunch with friends, and played another round of Cards Against Humanity on Saturday with some friends.Details + interesting tidbits: I kept the JAN cutout from last week showing through to this week instead of covering it, and kept most of the colors neutral with a couple of pops of blue and pink to bring out the neutral colored photos. Photo Breakdown: phone photos: 11 // DSLR photos: 0 // polaroid photos: 0. Taken by me, the self-timer, and shutter remotes.Materials Used: Studio Calico PL kits: cirque ("happiness" card, "me and you" card); far far away (arrow card, "hello" week card); walden ("golden" tag); camelot ("hello" banner), tiny attacher, fiskars corner rounderfiskars paper trimmerstaz-on jet black ink, smash date stampzig writer for vellum marker in black (on photos), zig writer marker in black (on journal cards), canon selphy wireless printer, canon selphy ink + paper kit.

30 days of: shoes. (why it failed + why that's okay).

I originally set out to do 30 days of: shoes through the middle of January. I extended it to the end of January, because I had skipped a bunch of days, and didn't want to take multiple photos on one day to make up for it. Well beyond the thirty day mark (closer to sixty days), I am throwing up my hands and moving on. I took twenty photos in the two months since I set out to do this project, and rather than feeling like I failed, I feel relieved.In my past 30 days of projects, I felt excited to take a new photo every day, and wanted to try to think outside the box about what to do with the same type of photo the next day (especially with the coffee installment). I thought that shoes would be a great next approach, because I am a repeat offender of the photo-from-above, and it was something that I would do without thinking a lot of the time. I though, "piece of cake." Not so much. Turns out that a bunch of photos of the same three pairs of shoes, from the same angle, and a lot of times, from the same location (train platform, haaaay) is suuuuper boring and uninspiring. I could have used this lack of inspiration to recreate the project and revamp it, but I discovered that I was a uninterested.At the beginning of this project, I found it fun, exciting, and a way to be more creative. Now, I'm finding it to be more of a chore, I'm beating myself up when I forget to take a photo one or two days in a row (or five), and the integrity of the project is almost completely gone. Not to mention that part of the issue is that my phone no longer rests on its side anymore (the 4S had flat sides, great for propping up just about anywhere and taking photos from a different perspective. The 6 is a curvier model that hasn't yet learned to stand). So I think I'm retiring it now. I had fun in the beginning, and I feel ready to brainstorm a new photo project. Maybe one day in the future I'll miss the project and want to come back to it, but it would have to grow tremendously to capture my attention again. I will attribute this change of monthly project to the fact that I'm always growing and adapting every day. (Let me throw my One Little Word down your throats a little bit more, shall I? I kid. But seriously, those words have power, man).

project life 2015 // week three.

January 12 - January 18.What went on this week: This week was kind of a slow one, but my best friends and I finally exchanged Christmas presents, and one of mine was Cards Against Humanity, so that became a prominent part of the weekend. I did a little bit of crafting as gifts for my friends (this canvas, this canvas, and a couple of these), carried home a cactus on the train from the city, and noticed that my right pinky is never not raised, even when I'm typing or using a mousepad.Details + interesting tidbits: I rolled with the yellow in the photo of my cactus and chose yellow journaling cards, and then countered with black and white to match the Cards Against Humanity photos. I love the "made this" card from the cirque SC kit, and the JAN cutout from far far away.Photo Breakdown: phone photos: 7 // DSLR photos: 2 // polaroid photos: 0. Taken by me, the self-timer, and shutter remotes.Materials Used: PL core kits: midnight edition (striped card, polka dot week card), Studio Calico PL kits: cirque ("made this" card); far far away (JAN cutout, "jan _ 2015" card); park ave (yellow circle card, yellow gradient card), xyron create-a-sticker, fiskars corner rounderfiskars paper trimmerstaz-on jet black ink, smash date stampzig writer for vellum marker in black (on photos), zig writer marker in black (on journal cards), canon selphy wireless printer, canon selphy ink + paper kit.

almond snowdrop cookies.

I was originally going to make these cookies around Christmas, but then made a last minute change and baked peppermint oreo pudding cookies. I now know that this was a mistake, and that there is lit'rally no reason to ever bake any other cookies but these almond cookies for the rest of my life. That good.// 1 C butter
// 1/2 C confectioners sugar
// 1/2 tsp. salt
// 1 C finely chopped almonds
// 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract
// 2 C flour1// Cream butter, salt, and sugar together, then add in the almonds and vanilla.
2// Add the flour gradually.
3// Scoop teaspoon-size balls onto a greased baking sheet and bake on 325* for 15 minutes.
4// Sprinkle confectioners sugar on top while the cookies are hot, then when fully cooled, cover them with the sugar by shaking them around in a ziploc.Everyone who got to eat one of these puppies loved them, and they are the most simple cookies to make. Between prep and baking, it takes about 30 minutes from taking out the ingredients to getting these into your mouth, which is both efficient and delicious.

project life 2015 // week two.

January 5 - January 11.What went on this week: This week was pretty typical at work, so not a lot of photos besides a couple shots on the train platform for 30 days of: shoes. My friend Tashween had a waffle themed birthday party at her apartment on Saturday, which was pinteresty and wonderful. Details + interesting tidbits: This was the first week I completely used the canon selphy for photos, and the first week using my favorite color scheme that I constantly used in my last album. Didn't take long. There's nothing super special about this spread, but I liked that most of the pictures had a lot of natural lighting, because when they don't I get frustrated with the quality and colors.Photo Breakdown: phone photos: 10 // DSLR photos: 1 // polaroid photos: 0. Taken by me, the self-timer, and shutter remotes.Materials Used: PL core kits: midnight edition ('right now' card); seafoam edition (striped week, five Ws card), Studio Calico PL kits: far far away ('love this' card); the underground ('yes or no' card), elise joy stamps, fiskars corner rounderfiskars paper trimmerstaz-on jet black ink, smash date stampzig writer for vellum marker in black (on photos), zig writer marker in black (on journal cards), canon selphy wireless printer, canon selphy ink + paper kit.

five on friday: facial cleansers.

1. Philosophy Purity One-Step Facial Cleanser // 2. The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Facial Wash  // 3. Lush Ocean Salt Face and Body Scrub // 4. Dermalogica PreCleanse // 5. First Aid Beauty Red Clay Deep CleanserI feel like I've finally found the perfect combination of facial cleansers that has left my skin clear and hydrated (most of the time #dryskinprobs). It definitely all started with the Dermalogica PreCleanse, which is a cleansing oil that unclogs the oil on your face with oil (mind blown, right?!), removing the excess but leaving enough in your skin that you don't get over-oily to compensate. I use that at night to remove all of my makeup, then after rinsing I alternate using the Red Clay cleanser and Purity, which both leave my skin soft. I like to use the ocean salt scrub every few days in the morning to exfoliate my skin, followed by the tea tree cleanser, which is a literal miracle worker, though sometimes I alternate with Purity because it's more gentle after rough exfoliation. If I had to choose just one of these products, it would have to be Purity because it's a makeup remover and gentle cleanser all in one, but luckily there's absolutely no reason I have to choose. Boom.

selphy printer joy!

I've died and gone to this-is-the-easiest-way-to-print-ever heaven. For project life in 2014, I used my hp printer from college that just could not get his shit together. I would connect it to wireless and it would work for a day, then crap out. Or I'd connect it directly to my computer and it would print nonsense, or nothing at all. I started using snapfish.com at the end of last year because once I got behind on the project, I needed weeks of prints at a time, and it was cheap and easy to do it there. Though I think I'll always use snapfish when I need a larger batch of prints, I knew I was going to need something for the week to week printing involved with project life. Enter Christmas and enter the Canon Selphy C910.Never has printing been this easy for me. I have printed pretty much everything so far straight from my iphone, which connects directly to the printer. Anything that I want to print from my DSLR can be done via the SD card slot, and because of the screen on the printer I can preview the photos on my memory card, choose which ones to print, and even crop before printing.My only complaint about the product is that the ink and the photo paper is sold together, and while this is extremely convenient, the paper isn't really my favorite. I'd prefer something matte, and this paper is glossy, but it's not the biggest deal. I just wish that I could buy the ink separately so that I could use whatever paper I wanted. But honestly, this printer is the coolest, and it's tiny and portable and I'm obsesssssssssed with it. Highly recommend.

project life 2015 // week one.

January 1 - January 4.What went on this week: This week was about catching up on the last few weeks of 2014's album, and making sure that I had that finished before starting this one. It was a short week, because I decided to start the album January 1 (even though most photos are from New Year's Eve, sue me).Details + interesting tidbits: I used a photo of the "just start" card because I kind of want to frame the actual card, but still want it in the album to remind myself this year to "just start", while procrastinating and worrying less than I have been known to in the past. I also wrote out the quote that I used from my post on why I chose the word adapt for this year.Photo Breakdown: phone photos: 9 // DSLR photos: 0 // polaroid photos: 0. Taken by me, the self-timer, and shutter remotes.Materials Used: PL core kits: midnight edition (week card, polka dot card), Studio Calico PL kits: penny arcade (criss-cross card); park ave (purple diamond card, best year yet card, wood banner), elise joy stamps, calendar card, xyron create-a-sticker, gold paint marker, fiskars corner rounderfiskars paper trimmerstaz-on jet black ink, smash date stampzig writer for vellum marker in black (on photos), zig writer marker in black (on journal cards), canon selphy wireless printer, canon selphy ink + paper kit.

ipsy glam bag review | january.

1. La Fresh Eco-beauty day moisturizer // 2. Velvet 59 Lip Gloss in 'Nude Cocoa' // 3. Elizabeth Mott All Over Shadow Brush // 4. Pacifica Coconut Eye Shadow in 'Etheral' // 5. Hikari Cosmetics Mechanical Eye Liner in 'Storm'.This month's bag was meh. It was the kind of bag that made me go into my profile settings on ipsy and re-answer the questions that help them to create a personalized bag because I'm tried of getting products that are not a color I would use, not the type of product I like, or very similar to another one that I've already gotten. The eye liner was another crappy formula that isn't going to get used because I feel like I would have to push so hard on my eye to get the color payoff that it would pop out of its socket. The eye shadow is similar to another Pacifica eye shadow that I got a few months back, and the formula is so chalky that I don't know how I would ever get the color to stay on my lids. The lip gloss is just. Ugh, I hate lip gloss. It's sticky, it's hard to spread on your lips, and this particular lip gloss was more like a nude colored glue. Pass. The brush was awesome, because I love getting new brushes, and shadow brushes are ones that don't need to be as perfect as a face brush. As long as it gets product on, which is does, I'm happy with it. Finally, the moisturizer was just okay. It was definitely moisturizing, but I have other creams like I like way more. Also, the smell (a bit like kale green juice) was totally not for me.

I'm going to see how next month goes with my new profile question answers, but it may soon be time to try out another beauty service and switch things up a bit in the future.

january book report.

One Plus One. This is the second book that I read by Jojo Moyes, and I feel a bit the same as I did after the other one. It was an easy read, entertaining, a little predictable, but also worth turning the pages. It was a little all over the place with multiple narrators, especially as two were adults and two were children, all with widely different personalities, which sometimes annoys me, but in this case it was alright because the book wasn't too complicated to keep up with.
"She couldn’t believe losing someone you had known such a short time could feel like losing part of yourself, that it could make food taste wrong and colors seem dull."

The Maze Runner. I have wanted to read this since I saw that the movie was coming out, and even though I was unsure how into it I'd be, I loved it. I thought it was smart, kind of unpredictable, and definitely full of a similar type of action as in both the Hunger Games and Divergent series. I'm excited for the second one and to have another series to chip away at, and the movie was pretty good, so that's always a bonus.
"Sometimes you don’t look very hard for things you don’t believe will or can happen."

An Abundance Of Katherines. Ah, John Green. What a gem. All of his books are sooooo similar, but they all have enough differences that I still love his stories. It's like a tiny bit of mystery with the feeling that I'm in a familiar, comfortable place. This story about a boy named Colin trying to figure out what he's meant to do in life and how to get back the the girl who broke his heart was really cute, and like Green's other novels, just made me feel good.
"[He] wondered only how something that isn't there can hurt you."

The Good Luck Of Right Now. If you're a fan of The Curious Incident, or The Rosie Project, you'll love this novel. Bartholomew has lost his mother, the person he's spent every day of his life with thus far, so he begins corresponding with Richard Gere, an actor whom his mother admired. Never having known his father, he looks to Gere as a role model, a father figure, and a friend throughout the novel, telling him stories, asking him questions, hoping for a response and some guidance. The letters reveal more and more about Bartholomew and what he's been through, and continues to go through, and ultimately help him to realize more about himself. I thought it was an interesting novel, and was definitely hooked all the way through.
"We don't know anything. But we can choose how we respond to whatever comes out way. We have a choice always. Remember that!"

I'll Give You The Sun. Rarely does a book leave me as speechless as this one has. As soon as I read the last word I wanted to read the whole novel again. The story is told from the point of view of California twins Noah and Jude over two years' time. Both children are artists, growing up much like every other teen around them, but with artistic talent unlike most. The language aptly paints pictures, the words spin together to form poetry, and throughout the entire story the reader can feel what Noah and Jude are feeling and see what they are seeing. I've never felt more connected to two characters, and the multi-narrator format was so perfect for this novel and its events. This book has no doubt slipped into my top spot as my favorite book, and I can't wait to read Jandy Nelson's other novel.
"It's never occurred to me that the stars are still up there shining even in the daytime when we can't see them."

Landline. I was a bit disappointed in this book. I think the concept could have really gone somewhere cool, but it turned out to be really repetitive (literally the entire novel repeating the same three things in not even that many different ways over and over again), and the main character and narrator, Georgie, was super whiney. Georgie is away from her husband and children over Christmas while they are in Omaha, and she's back home in LA working on the show she's writing with her best friend, Seth. The same few small points are reiterated through the entire story, and her thought process and deductions about her life are the same, just repeated a million times. It got a little old and I was glad to finally get to the ending of this one.
"Just because you love someone...that doesn't mean your lives will fit together."

That's 6/25 of my yearly reading goal, which is a crazy start. Next up, Big Little Lies and Love, Rosie.
